The city has undergone significant administrative changes over many decades. On 15 February 1936, the government established the Nonthaburi town municipality, known as a thesaban mueang. At that time, the municipality was very small. It only covered the Suan Yai subdistrict, or tambon. This original area was only 2.3 square kilometers in size. This small beginning was the foundation for the large city that exists today.

Growth continued until a major upgrade occurred in the mid-1990s. On 25 September 1995, Nonthaburi was upgraded to a city municipality, called a thesaban nakhon. This change involved a massive enlargement of the city boundaries. The municipality added four new subdistricts to its territory. These areas are Talat Khwan, Bang Khen, Bang Kraso, and Tha Sai. This expansion increased the total city area to 62 square kilometers.

Today, Nonthaburi is a very large and crowded urban center. As of 31 December 2019, the city had a registered population of 254,375 people. This specific number makes it a very important location in the country. In fact, it is the most populous city municipality in Thailand. This ranking remains true if you exclude the capital city of Bangkok. The city manages its large population through various local structures.

Local governance involves many different community groups. There are 93 communities, known as chumchon, within the city. These communities are not directly chosen by the local citizens. However, they play an important role in how the city functions. The chumchon provide advice and recommendations to local administrative organizations. This system helps the local government understand the needs of the people living there.

Transportation is a major part of life in Nonthaburi. The city is well-connected to the surrounding metropolitan area. Residents can use the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority bus system to travel. For water travel, the Chao Phraya Express Boat provides service along the river. The city also uses modern rapid transit systems. The MRT Purple Line was inaugurated in 2016 to move people quickly. More recently, the MRT Pink Line was inaugurated in 2024.
