It is part of a group of chemicals called nitrogen oxides. This gas is very important in many different industries. It is used to help make nitric acid. Millions of tons of nitric acid are made every year. Most of this acid is used to create fertilizers for plants.

Because it is used in so many ways, we must understand it well.

This gas can be made in several different ways. In factories, it is often made through the Ostwald Process. This process starts by using ammonia to create nitric acid. It can also be made by heating certain metal nitrates. In the natural world, it forms when lightning strikes or volcanoes erupt. It also forms when nitrogen and oxygen combine at very high temperatures. This often happens during combustion, which is when fuel is burned.

Humans use this gas for many big jobs. It is a key part of making chemical explosives. It can also be used to bleach flour. Some scientists use it as a way to stop certain chemicals from growing. In space travel, it acts as an oxidizer for rocket fuel. It helped power the Titan rockets for Project Gemini. It was also used in the maneuvering thrusters of the Space Shuttle.

We can find nitrogen dioxide in many places around us. It is often found in the air from car engines. Inside a home, gas stoves can increase the amount of this gas. This can lead to lower air quality indoors. It can also be found in cigarette smoke or from certain heaters. In the atmosphere, it plays a role in regulating ozone levels. It also helps by absorbing sunlight in the sky.

Even though it is useful, we must be careful with it. Breathing in large amounts of this gas can be very dangerous. It can cause irritation in the nose and throat. For some people, it can lead to breathing diseases or asthma. In the environment, it can mix with water to create acid rain. This acid rain can harm forests and lakes. Scientists use special tools to monitor the air and keep people safe.
