The Famicom had a red and white look. It was designed to look like a toy.

An engineer named Masayuki Uemura designed the system. He wanted to make a machine that was cheap. It had to be easy for families to buy. The team used game cartridges to play games. These are plastic boxes that hold the game data.

Nintendo wanted to bring arcade games into the home. They used parts from the Donkey Kong arcade machine. This helped the games look good on a TV. The NES was very successful in North America. It helped the video game industry grow again after a big crash. Many famous games came from this system. These include Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. Nintendo sold over 61 million consoles.
