It involved France fighting against a group called the Grand Alliance. This group included many different lands and leaders. The war was not just in Europe, though. It also included fights in Ireland and North America. These different battles were all linked to the main struggle.

This war changed how borders were drawn in Europe. It showed how powerful one king could be. It also showed how other nations could join together to stop him.

King Louis XIV of France wanted to make his borders very strong.

He was often called the "Sun King" because of his great power. To protect France, he worked with a man named Vauban. Vauban was an expert at building strong fortresses. Louis XIV used these forts to hold onto new lands. He often took land by using legal arguments and force. This way of acting made his neighbors feel very unsafe. He wanted to create a line of forts that no one could break through.

Many leaders grew worried about the growing power of France.

William of Orange became a leader for those who opposed Louis XIV. He led the Grand Alliance to protect Protestant states. Leopold I was the Holy Roman Emperor and also helped lead the opposition. In 1688, the situation changed in England during the Glorious Revolution. This event helped the Alliance gain more support and resources. Fighting soon spread to many places like the Spanish Netherlands and Italy.

Both sides were running out of money to pay for the war. They were financially exhausted and wanted to find peace. In 1697, they signed the Peace of Ryswick to end the fighting.

Under this treaty, France kept control of Alsace. However, Louis XIV had to give back other lands like Lorraine. Spain also regained some of its territories from the French. This treaty helped bring a quiet time to Europe.

Even though the war ended, the peace was not perfect.

People saw the peace as just a short pause in fighting. There was still a big question about who would rule Spain. King Charles II of Spain was old and had no children. This caused a huge argument among the leaders of Europe. They could not agree on who should take over the Spanish Empire. Because they could not solve this, a new war began in 1701. This new conflict was called the War of the Spanish Succession.
