The war is also known as the Biafran War or the Nigeria-Biafra War. It began when the Republic of Biafra declared independence from Nigeria. This secessionist state wanted to become its own sovereign nation. The conflict was fought between the Nigerian federal government and the new Biafran state.

This war remains a significant event in African history.

The roots of the conflict lie in the colonial history of the region. In 1914, the British amalgamated several areas into one colony. This included the British Northern Protectorate, the Lagos Colony, and the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. This merger was intended to make administration easier for the British. However, it did not account for deep cultural and religious differences. Nigeria gained independence from the United Kingdom on October 1, 1960. The new nation had a population of 45.2 million people. This population included more than 300 diverse ethnic and cultural groups.

Three main ethnic groups shaped the political landscape of Nigeria. The Hausa-Fulani lived mostly in the north and followed a conservative Islamic hierarchy. They were ruled by emirs who owed allegiance to the Sultan of Sokoto. The Yoruba lived primarily in the southwest and had a system of monarchs called Obas. The Igbo lived in the southeast and practiced a more democratic social structure.

Igbo communities used general assemblies where men and women participated in decisions. These different political systems created different views on power and authority. In the north, leaders were often seen as figures to be obeyed. In the east, people often participated directly in political life.

In 1966, several events triggered the immediate outbreak of war. A military coup and a counter-coup caused great instability. There were also anti-Igbo pogroms in the Northern Region. These violent events led to a mass exodus of Igbo people. Many survivors fled the north to reach their homelands in the Eastern Region. The leadership of the Eastern Region felt the federal government could not protect them. Consequently, they decided to establish the independent country of Biafra. Field Marshal Gowon led Nigeria, while Lieutenant Colonel Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu led Biafra.

The war involved complex military movements and international involvement. Nigerian troops moved to surround Biafra and capture coastal oil facilities.

They also captured the city of Port Harcourt. During the stalemate, a blockade was imposed on Biafra. This blockade was a deliberate policy that prevented food and supplies from entering. This led to mass starvation among the Biafran civilian population.

The United Kingdom and the Soviet Union supported the Nigerian government. Meanwhile, Israel provided support to Biafra. The United States remained officially neutral during the fighting.

The human cost of the war was immense and devastating. There were approximately 100,000 military casualties during the conflict. Even more people died due to the blockade and famine. Between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation.

This media coverage turned the plight of Biafrans into a global cause célèbre. It helped increase funding for international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The Biafran airlift also inspired the later formation of Doctors Without Borders.

The war had lasting effects on Nigerian society and African politics. It highlighted the difficulties of pan-Africanism during early independence. The conflict showed that diverse populations could face obstacles to unity. It also revealed shortcomings in the Organization of African Unity. Within Nigeria, the war led to the political marginalization of the Igbo people. Nigeria has not had an Igbo president since the war ended.

This has led to the rise of new secessionist groups. Groups like the Indigenous People of Biafra continue to seek independence today.
