By 1875, the company was producing 634 of these engines every year, but Otto knew he needed a more powerful design.
Otto's path to success was filled with both failures and persistence. He was born on June 10, 1832, in Holzhausen an der Haide, Germany. In 1861, he tried to build a liquid-fueled engine based on a design by Jean Joseph Etienne Lenoir. However, his first attempt at a four-stroke compressed charge engine in 1862 broke after only a few minutes of running. He eventually partnered with Eugen Langen in 1864 to form NA Otto & Cie. This was the world's first company dedicated entirely to designing and producing internal combustion engines. Through this partnership, Otto was able to fund the research necessary to overcome his earlier technical failures.
The breakthrough came in the autumn of 1876 with the arrival of the Rings-Schumm engine. 
Despite his massive success, Otto faced complex legal challenges regarding his patents. A French engineer named Beau De Rochas had actually patented the concept of a four-cycle engine in 1862. Although De Rochas never actually built an engine, his patent allowed other inventors to work around Otto's claims. For example, Gottlieb Daimler was able to sell his own engines in Germany without paying royalties to Otto's company. This happened because Daimler's lawyers used the De Rochas patent to find a legal solution. This competition helped drive the rapid development of small engines used for transportation.
Otto's influence extended far beyond his own workshop and into many different fields. While he designed his engines to be stationary motors, they paved the way for the first automobiles. In 1884, Otto even invented electric ignition to improve engine performance. His son, Gustav Otto, continued the family legacy by becoming an aircraft builder. The impact of his work is so lasting that his home has been turned into a museum. From the gold medal he won at the 1867 World Exhibition in Paris to the modern DIN standards, the name Otto remains central to the history of mechanical engineering.
