To make the fuel burn, the engine needs a spark. High voltage provides this spark through a magneto or an ignition coil. In modern cars, a computer called an Engine Control Unit manages the ignition timing. This unit can also function as a rev limiter. A rev limiter prevents the engine from overrevving. Overrevving can cause serious damage like valve float or connecting rod failure. 
Starting an engine can be difficult in cold weather. This happens because there is not enough heat to vaporize the fuel in the carburetor. To solve this, some engines use a device called a primer. A primer draws fuel from the tanks. It then vaporizes that fuel directly into the piston cylinders. This helps the engine start more easily when it is cold. 
Engine layouts vary depending on how they are built. Many piston engines use a straight layout or a V engine shape. Other designs include flat engines or W engines. Wankel engines are a special type classified by the number of rotors they use. Engines also need cooling to stay at the right temperature. They are built to be either air-cooled or water-cooled.

The first practical petrol engine was built in 1876. Nicolaus August Otto and Eugen Langen built this engine in Germany. Their work provided a reliable way to use internal combustion.
