math Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Imagine a group of friends working together to write a giant book. Instead of using their own names, they use one fake name. This name is Nicolas Bourbaki.

This group is not just a few people. They are a large collective of mathematicians from France. They wanted to create a very special series of textbooks. These books are called the Éléments de mathématique. The series covers many big ideas like sets and algebra.

This work helps people see the deep structures in math.

The group works in a very careful way. They hold private meetings to talk about their ideas. They split big topics into small groups called subcommittees. Each group writes a draft of a new section. Then, the members debate the ideas together. Every single person must agree before a text is finished.

This slow process makes sure their math is very exact. It is a lot of hard work, but it produces great results.

This group started because of a sad time in history. After the First World War, many French mathematicians had died. This meant that new teachers had to use very old books.

Henri Cartan and André Weil wanted to fix this problem. They met in Paris in December 1934 to plan a new book. They wanted to make math teaching modern again. The group officially formed in July 1935 at Besse-en-Chandesse.

They even went skinny-dipping in a lake during their meeting!

The name Bourbaki came from a funny story. André Weil remembered a prank from his student days. An older student once pretended to be a professor. He gave a lecture about a fake "theorem of Bourbaki."

The group also liked the name of a famous French general. His name was Charles-Denis Bourbaki. He was a successful leader in the 19th century. The name was very familiar to students in France at that time.

Bourbaki changed how people think about math. They introduced the idea of mathematical structures. This idea helped connect math to other sciences. Their work even influenced how children learned math in the 1960s.

Even though they do not publish books as often now, they are still active. They published a new volume in 2023 about spectral theory. They are also working on three more volumes right now. The spirit of Bourbaki lives on through their careful work.
