He was born in Saint Petersburg to a Baltic German father and a Russian mother. His upbringing allowed him to meet many scientists and artists. This exposure helped him develop a natural curiosity for many topics. He studied both art and law at the same time during his youth. His life's work was driven by the idea of finding harmony through culture and spirituality.

Roerich was an incredibly productive artist who created over 7,000 paintings.

His style was influenced by Russian Symbolism. This movement used art to express mystical ideas and the power of transformation. He was also influenced by Russian Cosmism. This philosophy tried to connect science, religion, and the universe into one view. Most of his paintings featured grand natural landscapes. He was particularly interested in the Himalayas. He used symbolic imagery and themes from ancient religions to make his art feel transcendental. This means his work aimed to connect the viewer to a higher spiritual plane.

Beyond canvas painting, Roerich was a highly successful stage designer. He worked with the famous Ballets Russes, a renowned ballet company.

He created sets and costumes for several major performances. One notable example was the 1913 premiere of The Rite of Spring by Igor Stravinsky. He also designed art for religious architecture. He created a large painting on a wall, called a fresco, for the Church of the Holy Spirit. He also designed stained glass windows for the Datsan Gunzechoinei. His interest in architecture was so deep that he published a book titled "Architectural Studies" in 1904. This book contained paintings of fortresses and monasteries he visited during trips through Russia.

Roerich's life was shaped by major historical shifts and his own spiritual journey. During the early 1900s, he and his wife, Helena, became interested in Eastern religions. They studied the teachings of figures like Ramakrishna and the poetry of Rabindranath Tagore. This interest led them to found Agni Yoga. This is a system of "living ethics" that combines Western and Eastern thought.

The political situation in Russia also changed his path. After the 1917 Russian Revolution, Roerich grew concerned about the safety of Russian culture. He feared that the new political regime would destroy important art and buildings. Because of these fears, he and his family emigrated to Finland, then London, and eventually the United States.

In the United States, Roerich became a major advocate for the protection of global culture. He believed in the concept of "Peace through Culture."

He launched the Banner of Peace movement to protect cultural sites. This effort led to the Roerich Pact in April 1935. This pact was a formal agreement to protect art and architecture. It was ratified by the United States and most nations in the Pan-American Union. Roerich's dedication to peace was so significant that he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize several times. He spent much of his time in America between 1920 and 1923, where his art toured the country.

Roerich's later years were spent in Asia, where he explored his spiritual connections deeply. He believed he received telepathic messages from spiritual masters in the Himalayas. These beings were said to belong to an esoteric Buddhist community. This belief helped him form a "Great Plan" for unifying people through religious movements. He eventually settled in Naggar, India, where he lived until his death in 1947.
