It serves as the county seat for Essex County. The city is also a principal part of the New York metropolitan area. Newark sits at a strategic geographic location. It is located at the mouth of the Passaic River. This river flows directly into Newark Bay. This position makes the waterfront vital to the Port of New York and New Jersey.

Specifically, the Port Newark–Elizabeth terminal is the main container shipping hub. It is the busiest seaport on the U.S. East Coast.

Transportation is a major feature of the city's infrastructure. Newark Liberty International Airport is located here. It was the first municipal commercial airport in the United States. Today, it remains one of the busiest airports in the country.

The city also functions as a major corporate and educational hub. Many large companies keep their headquarters in Newark. These include Prudential, PSEG, and the Panasonic Corporation of North America. Higher education is also central to the city. Institutions include the Newark campus of Rutgers University and the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Rutgers also hosts law and medical schools there.

Newark has a long history dating back to the 17th century. Puritan settlers from the New Haven Colony arrived in 1666.

They were led by Robert Treat. The settlers purchased the land from the Hackensack Indians. They traded goods such as gunpowder, axes, blankets, and kettles. This transaction was valued at $750. The settlers assessed a portion of this cost on every family arriving in the first year. The settlement was originally intended to be a theocratic assembly. This means it was meant to be governed by religious principles. However, new settlers arrived with different ideas, and this system did not last.

The origin of the name "Newark" is a subject of historical debate. One theory links it to Newark-on-Trent in England. This connection may stem from the first pastor, Abraham Pierson. He was a native of Yorkshire and likely ministered in Nottinghamshire. Another theory suggests the name was meant to be "New Ark." This would refer to the New Ark of the Covenant. Some settlers also viewed the name as "New-Work." They saw the settlement as their new work with God. Regardless of the specific origin, the name eventually became Newark.

The city's demographics and layout have changed significantly over time. Newark is divided into five political wards: East, West, South, North, and Central.

The population distribution varies by ward. Most Black residents live in the South, Central, and West Wards. The North and East Wards are mostly populated by Latinos. The Hispanic population grew rapidly between 1970 and 2010. It more than doubled during that period. As of the 2020 census, the population was 311,549. By 2024, estimates placed the population at 317,303. This makes Newark the 64th-most populous municipality in the nation.

Newark experienced periods of both intense growth and significant decline. The city saw massive industrial and population growth during the 19th and early 20th centuries. However, the second half of the 20th century brought challenges. Racial tensions led to the 1967 Newark riots. This event accelerated "white flight," where white residents moved to the suburbs. Between 1960 and 1970, an additional 100,000 white residents left the city. This caused the city to lose more than 5 percent of its total population. Since the 1990s, Newark has undergone a major revitalization. This includes $2 billion in investment for office, arts, and sports projects.

Cultural and recreational spaces define much of the city's character. The city is home to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Newark Symphony Hall.
