Nettilling Lake is a massive freshwater lake in Canada. It sits near the south end of Baffin Island. This area is part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut. The lake is a very significant part of the Arctic landscape. It is the largest lake in the territory of Nunavut. It also holds a special title in geography. Nettilling Lake is the largest lake located on an island in the world. It ranks as the 27th largest lake globally by area.

The lake is part of a larger water system. Amadjuak Lake feeds into Nettilling Lake. Amadjuak Lake is the second largest lake on Baffin Island. Many smaller streams and lakes also provide water to the system. The water eventually leaves the lake toward the west. It flows through the Koukdjuak River. This river is described as being very shallow. Finally, the river empties into the Foxe Basin. This movement of water connects the lake to the ocean.

Nettilling Lake has two very different physical sections. The eastern half of the lake contains many small islands. These islands break up the surface of the water. The western half of the lake is quite different. This side is much deeper than the east. There are no islands located in the western part of the lake. The entire lake is subject to the Arctic climate. It remains frozen for most of the year. The Arctic Circle actually crosses directly through the lake.

The name of the lake has deep cultural roots. It comes from the Inuktitut language. The name is derived from the word netsilak. In Inuktitut, this word means the adult ringed seal. This name connects the water to the animals that live there. Explorers have visited the southern shore for a long time. Franz Boas explored this part of the shore in 1884. His exploration helped document the southern edge of the lake.

Many different animals rely on this environment to survive. Ringed seals live within the lake itself. There are also three recorded species of fish in these waters. These species are the Arctic char. You can also find the ninespine fish here. The third species is the three-spined stickleback. These animals live in the cold, freshwater environment. They are part of a delicate Arctic food web.

The land surrounding the lake is also very important. This area is known as the Great Plain of the Koukdjuak. The landscape is covered in tundra. The tundra stretches from the lake south to Amadjuak Lake. This land is vital for barren-ground caribou. The caribou use the tundra for feeding. They also use the area for calving. Calving is when the caribou give birth to their young. This makes the region a critical habitat for the species.

Nettilling Lake is a major feature of the Canadian landscape. It is the eleventh largest lake in all of Canada. It is also one of the largest lakes located entirely within Canada. The lake sits northwest of the city of Iqaluit. Because of its size and location, it is a key part of the Baffin Island geography. Its position in the Arctic Circle makes it a unique place for study. The lake serves as a massive reservoir of freshwater in a cold region.
