The neon tetra is a tiny, bright fish from South America.

It lives in the Amazon basin in places like Brazil, Peru, and Colombia. These fish love dark, acidic waters called blackwater streams. They also live in clearwater streams, but they stay away from whitewater rivers. Their glowing colors are very important for staying safe. These bright stripes help them find other fish in the dark water.

Because they look so pretty, people all over the world love to keep them in home tanks.

These fish have a very special way of showing color. They have a blue stripe and a red stripe on their sides. The colors change depending on the light around them. This happens because of tiny crystals called guanine in their cells. These crystals reflect light to make the stripes shine.

When it is dark at night, the stripes turn gray or black. When the sun comes up, the colors become bright again. In the light, the stripes look blue-green. In the dark, they change to a color called indigo.

People first learned about these fish a long time ago. A scientist named George S. Myers described them in 1936. He named the fish after a man named William T. Innes. Today, neon tetras are among the most popular tropical fish in the world. About two million of them are sold in the United States every month.

Most of these fish come from farms in Southeast Asia. Some are still collected from the wild in South America.

There are small differences between male and female neon tetras. This is called sexual dimorphism. A male fish has a slender body and a straight blue stripe. A female fish is often rounder with a larger belly. Her blue stripe might look a little bent instead of straight.

In a home tank, these fish usually live for two to three years. In the wild, they can live as long as ten years. They are social animals that like to swim in groups. It is best to keep at least six of them together.

Keeping neon tetras healthy is a lot like caring for a small garden. They do best in tanks with many plants to hide in. They eat many things, like small flakes or tiny shrimp.

Sometimes, they can get a sickness called neon tetra disease. This is caused by tiny parasites. It is hard to cure, so it is best to prevent it. Keeping the water clean and watching new fish is a good way to stay safe. This helps all the fish in the group stay happy and bright.
