Neil Darrow Strauss is a prominent American author and journalist. He is known for exploring complex human subcultures through deep research.

His career spans music criticism, celebrity biography, and investigative non-fiction. Strauss has written for major publications like The New York Times and Rolling Stone. He often uses immersive methods to understand the subjects he covers. This approach allows him to transform personal experiences into widely read books. His work frequently reaches the top of bestseller lists.

Strauss began his professional journey in journalism while studying psychology. He graduated from Columbia University in 1991 after attending Vassar College.

He started by writing for the avant-garde magazine Ear. He later worked at The Village Voice in several roles. These roles included copyediting, fact-checking, and writing copy. Eventually, he became a music critic for The New York Times. There, he wrote the Pop Life column and covered topics like music censorship and radio payola. He also served as a contributing editor at Rolling Stone.

As a music critic, Strauss achieved significant professional recognition. He won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award for his coverage of Kurt Cobain's death. He also received acclaim for a profile of Eric Clapton.

His reporting covered a wide range of famous figures. These included Madonna, Tom Cruise, and the Wu-Tang Clan. He wrote liner notes for the band Nirvana. Beyond print, he has appeared in music videos for artists like Beck and Thirty Seconds to Mars. He even made a brief appearance in the television series Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Strauss is perhaps most famous for his immersion in the seduction community. In 2001, he adopted the persona "Style" to join this subculture.

He studied under a teacher known as Mystery. In 2005, he published The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists. This book documented his transformation and his interactions with various people. It reached the #1 position on Amazon.com immediately after its release. The book also spent a full month on The New York Times bestseller list. This work is credited with making the pickup artist community widely known.

Following his success with The Game, Strauss explored different media formats. He released a follow-up called Rules of the Game in 2007.

He also founded the Stylelife Academy, a dating coaching company. In 2006, he released a short film titled Shoot. He also co-created the TV drama The Product for the network FX. In 2012, he released a party game called Who's Got Game? The Game with Benefits. His career shows a constant movement between journalism, coaching, and entertainment.

Strauss's non-fiction often involves intense, long-term investigations. For his 2009 book Emergency: This Book Will Save Your Life, he spent three years researching. He lived among survivalists, tax-dodgers, and billionaire businessmen. This book reached number 3 on The New York Times bestseller list. During this period, he performed search-and-rescue work. This service earned him the President's Volunteer Service Award. He also wrote the compilation Everyone Loves You When You're Dead, which contains 228 celebrity vignettes.

In recent years, Strauss has addressed personal themes and new technologies. In 2015, he published The Truth: An Uncomfortable Book About Relationships. This book explored his struggles to maintain a relationship after his time in the seduction community.

He also entered the digital space with a book on Ethereum. This book, titled Survive All Apocalypses, was acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2023, he collaborated with music producer Rick Rubin on The Creative Act: A Way of Being. This collaboration became a number one bestseller. His work continues to connect human behavior with modern culture.
