Richard Wayne Bandler is an influential American figure in the self-help field. He is a writer, a consultant, and a public speaker. Bandler is most famous for helping to found neuro-linguistic programming, or NLP. NLP is a specific approach to psychotherapy. This method focuses on the connection between neurological processes, language, and behavioral patterns. Through his work, Bandler has shared tools intended to help individuals improve their lives.

The development of NLP involved a careful study of communication and thought. Bandler worked closely with John Grinder to build these models. Grinder was a professor who specialized in linguistics, which is the study of language. During their collaboration, Grinder noticed that Bandler's insights could be explained using transformational grammar. This is a way of looking at the structure of language. Together, they formed a therapist training group. This group served as the foundation for their influential 1975 book, The Structure of Magic.

To create the foundational models of NLP, Bandler and Grinder studied existing experts. They looked closely at the methods used by Milton Erickson and Virginia Satir. These individuals were known for their unique ways of helping people. By analyzing their techniques, Bandler and Grinder were able to codify specific processes. This means they turned observations into a structured system. This system allows practitioners to understand how language impacts the human mind.

Bandler's early life and education provided a background for his later psychological work. He was born in 1950 in Teaneck, New Jersey. He later attended high school in Sunnyvale, California. Bandler has stated that he experienced severe physical trauma as a child. After his parents separated, he moved to the San Francisco area with his mother. He attended the University of California, Santa Cruz, or UCSC. In 1973, he earned a BA degree in philosophy and psychology there.

Bandler continued his formal studies in psychology at Lone Mountain College. This college was located in San Francisco. He completed his MA degree in psychology in 1975. Before his work with Grinder, Bandler was already involved in psychological studies. In 1973, he helped publisher Robert S. Spitzer edit a book called The Gestalt Approach. This manuscript was based on the work of Fritz Perls. Perls was a famous gestalt therapist who died in 1970. Bandler also helped check transcripts for a 1973 work titled Eye Witness to Therapy.

In 1986, Bandler was involved in a serious legal matter in Santa Cruz. A woman named Corine Ann Christensen was shot and killed in her townhouse. The weapon used was a .357 magnum owned by Bandler. Authorities charged Bandler with her murder. Bandler testified during the trial that he had been at the house. However, he claimed that James Marino was the person who shot her. Marino was a friend of Bandler and a cocaine dealer. After a short deliberation, a jury found Bandler not guilty of the crime.

Bandler's career connects several different academic and professional fields. His work bridges the gap between linguistics and psychology. By using transformational grammar, he applied mathematical-like structures to human speech. This helped create a new way to approach psychotherapy. His contributions are categorized under many different labels. These include American hypnotists, self-help writers, and NLP writers. His legacy remains tied to the way people study the relationship between language and the brain.
