Cells are the tiny building blocks that make up all living things. Sometimes, cells die in a way that is not supposed to happen. This kind of cell death is called necrosis.

It is different from apoptosis, which is a natural way for cells to die on purpose. Necrosis is usually harmful to the body. It happens because of things like infections or physical injuries. This causes the cell to break down in an uncontrolled way. When cells undergo necrosis, they lose their shape and burst open. This releases their parts into the space around them. This event starts an inflammatory response in the nearby tissue. The body sends white blood cells, called leukocytes, to clean up the mess.

There are different ways that necrosis can look under a microscope. One way is called coagulative necrosis, where the tissue stays firm and keeps its shape. This often happens when there is not enough oxygen, a condition known as ischemia. Another way is liquefactive necrosis, where the dead cells turn into a liquid. This often happens during bacterial or fungal infections. This liquid is often a creamy yellow color called pus. There is also caseous necrosis, which looks like white, crumbly cheese. This type is often caused by certain fungi or bacteria like tuberculosis. Finally, fat necrosis happens when enzymes break down fatty tissues. This can create white spots that look like chalky flecks.

Scientists have studied these patterns for a long time. The term necrosis became well-known in the mid-19th century. Many people believe the German pathologist Rudolf Virchow helped name it. He is often called one of the founders of modern pathology. Pathology is the study of diseases and how they affect the body. By looking at how cells die, doctors can understand what is wrong. They can see if the death was caused by a lack of oxygen or a toxin. This helps them figure out the best way to help a patient. Understanding these patterns is a key part of modern medicine.

Many different things can cause necrosis to happen. External factors include things like electric shocks or extreme temperatures. For example, frostbite can cause cells to burst as ice crystals form. Chemical burns from acids or alkaline liquids can also cause it. Internal factors include things like nerve damage or certain diseases. Some animals even use necrosis in a special way. The blind mole rat has a unique way of handling cell death. In their burrows, they have low oxygen levels. They have a special way to stop cells from dying too early. This helps them stay resistant to cancer.

When necrosis happens, doctors have to act carefully. First, they must treat the original cause of the injury. If they do not, the dead tissue will continue to build up. This buildup is called debris, and it can stop the body from healing. Doctors often use a procedure called debridement to help.

Debridement is when they surgically remove the dead tissue. This clears the way so the healthy parts of the body can mend. It is a very important step in helping a person get better. Without it, the dead tissue could cause more harm to the surrounding area.
