Building this city was a huge project. Construction began in 2002 and finished by 2012. It was built on a greenfield site near Pyinmana. This site is about 320 kilometers north of the old capital, Yangon. The work cost an estimated US$4 billion. Three main groups carried out the construction. These included the military engineering corps and private contractors. The city officially replaced Yangon as the capital on 6 November 2005. The public learned its official name in March 2006.

Naypyidaw is the capital and third-largest city of Myanmar.
The city was built near Pyinmana, about 320 kilometers north of the former capital, Yangon. Construction began in 2002 and was finished by 2012. This massive project cost an estimated US$4 billion. Three main groups carried out the building work. These were the military's engineering corps, private contractors with ties to military officials, and the military conglomerate Myanma Economic Holdings Limited. Military projects were overseen by the Quartermaster General Tin Aung Myint Oo. Civilian projects were overseen by an army colonel named Thein Nyunt. The city officially replaced Yangon as the administrative capital on 6 November 2005.
There were several reasons why the government moved the capital. One reason was that Yangon had become too congested. Officials felt there was not enough room for new government offices to expand. Moving to the center of the country also made it a transportation hub. It sits adjacent to the Shan, Kayah, and Kayin states. Leaders believed a stronger military presence nearby would provide stability to those turbulent regions. Some historians believe the move was a return to the Dry Zone. This is where previous Burmese royal capitals were traditionally located for a thousand years. Some also suggest the goal was to build an impregnable citadel against invasions or uprisings.
Naypyidaw is organized into very specific zones.
Other specialized zones exist to support the city's functions. The Military zone is a restricted area for high-ranking officers. It is located 11 km away from regular government employees. This area includes tunnels and bunkers.
Despite its large size, the city has a very low population density. It covers a massive area of 7,054 square kilometers. However, the official population is only 924,608. This creates a lot of open space between different areas. The city also offers many recreational sites. The Naypyidaw Zoological Gardens features 1,500 animals and a climate-controlled penguin house. There is also a National Herbal Park with thousands of medicinal plants.
In March 2025, the city faced a major natural disaster. A large earthquake struck on 28 March. This event caused extensive damage throughout the city. About 80% of government buildings were damaged. The earthquake had the second highest death toll in the country. Residential areas like Zabuthiri Township and Bawgatheikdi wards were hit hard. Several apartment buildings collapsed in these areas.
