Planners built Navi Mumbai to help the nearby city of Mumbai. In the 1970s, Mumbai was becoming very crowded. People needed more housing and better ways to move around.

To fix this, the government created a plan for a "twin city" across the water. They used a group called CIDCO to lead the work. Planners divided the city into small areas called nodes. There are 19 nodes in total, such as Vashi, Nerul, and Kharghar. Sanpada is the smallest node, covering only 8.6 square kilometers.

Long before the modern city was planned, this area had a different history. In the late 1500s, the Siddis of Janjira built the Belapur Killa fort.

This fort sat on a small hill near Panvel Creek. The Portuguese captured the fort in 1682. Later, in 1733, the Marathas took control from the Portuguese. A leader named Chimaji Appa led this victory. He even vowed to place flower garlands in a temple to celebrate. Eventually, the British East India Company captured the area in 1817.

Today, Navi Mumbai is known for being a very clean place. It has ranked third in national cleanliness surveys for two years in a row.

Navi Mumbai is a major urban center located in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area. It sits within the Konkan division of Maharashtra, a state in western India.

The city is positioned on the Indian mainland, directly across from Salsette Island and the city of Mumbai. It spans parts of the Thane and Raigad districts. As an active business hub, it hosts many multinational corporations. These companies maintain head offices or various branches throughout the city. Navi Mumbai serves as a vital economic and residential area for the region.

The modern development of Navi Mumbai began in the early 1970s. At that time, the nearby city of Mumbai faced intense pressure from rapid growth. The population of Greater Mumbai doubled from three million to nearly six million between 1951 and 1971. This growth caused overcrowding and strained the existing infrastructure. To address these issues, the Maharashtra government planned a "twin city" across the harbour. This new area was intended to provide much-needed relief to Mumbai. The plan was finalized through the Bombay Metropolitan Region creation process.

Planning the city required the work of many specialized experts. Leading architects and urban planners like Charles Correa and Shirish Patel helped design the area. The City and Industrial Development Corporation, or CIDCO, was created to lead these efforts. CIDCO acquired land from 86 villages to build the new city. To organize the development, planners divided the area into 19 distinct nodes. These nodes include places like Vashi, Nerul, and Kharghar. Sanpada is the smallest of these nodes, covering 8.6 square kilometers.

The history of the land predates the modern city by centuries. In the late 1500s, the Siddis of Janjira built the Belapur Killa fort. This fort stood on a small hill near the mouth of Panvel Creek.

The Portuguese captured the fort in 1682 after annexing the surrounding regions. In 1733, the Marathas took control of the fort from the Portuguese. A leader named Chimaji Appa led this successful military campaign. He vowed to place beli leaf garlands in the Amruthaishwar temple after his victory. Eventually, the British East India Company captured the area on 23 June 1817.

Navi Mumbai is highly regarded for its sanitation and cleanliness. The area under the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has performed very well in national surveys. It ranked third among 73 cities in a survey by the Union Ministry of Urban Development. Specifically, it held the third rank in the Indian Commonwealth Cleanliness Survey for both 2022 and 2023.

Transportation connects Navi Mumbai to the rest of the country through several systems. The Mumbai suburban railway network serves the most populated regions. Key stations include Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, and Panvel.

The city also maintains natural features like mangroves and coastal areas. These environments support a significant population of flamingos within the region. As southern nodes like Kharghar and Kalamboli develop, the city continues to expand rapidly.
