General Qi Jiguang used timed explosives to harass pirate ships. Later, in 1574, Ralph Rabbards made the first sea mine plan in the West. He showed his design to Queen Elizabeth I of England. In 1777, an American named David Bushnell made the first American naval mine. He used a watertight keg filled with gunpowder.

In 1812, a Russian engineer named Pavel Shilling used an electrical circuit. In 1842, Samuel Colt used an electric detonator to show a mine to the US Navy. During the Crimean War, Russian specialists used many mines in the Gulf of Finland. These were designed by Moritz von Jacobi and Immanuel Nobel. The Jacobi mines were tied to the sea bottom with an anchor. They used a cable to get power from the shore. These mines were very expensive to make. Some Nobel mines cost 100 Russian rubles each. They were often faulty and sometimes exploded while being laid.

Today, naval mines are very sophisticated tools. They use complex electronic sensors to work much better than old gunpowder mines. Some mines are very cheap and cost only US $2,000. Other smart mines can cost millions of dollars. Even after a war ends, mines can stay a danger for many years. They must be found and removed by special ships called minesweepers.
