Before the magazine started, conservative people were not very organized. They had many ideas but lacked a single voice. William F. Buckley Jr. wanted to change this. He met with an editor named Will Schlamm. Together, they raised $300,000 to start the publication. They originally wanted to call it National Weekly. However, they changed the name to National Review.

Buckley started the magazine on November 19, 1955. He brought together many different types of writers. Some were libertarians, while others were anti-communists. He even included people who were Catholic intellectuals. One senior editor was Whittaker Chambers, who used to be a Communist spy. Buckley wanted to make conservative ideas feel respectable to everyone. He used the magazine to set boundaries for the movement. He worked to exclude people who held unfair or extreme views.

In the 1960s, the magazine helped leaders like Barry Goldwater. Buckley and his team worked hard on Goldwater's campaigns. Later, the magazine supported Ronald Reagan. They supported his presidency during the 1980s. During that time, they spoke for tax cuts and new economic ideas. They also supported Reagan's foreign policy against the Soviet Union. The magazine has always looked at many different political leaders.

Today, the magazine is still a major voice. It has a website called National Review Online. This site is often called N.R.O. It posts new articles and blogs every single day. The website has different sections for news and legal topics. Rich Lowry is the current editor-in-chief. Ramesh Ponnuru also serves as an editor. The magazine continues to discuss many important topics in America.
