Nathuram Godse was an Indian political activist. He belonged to groups like the RSS. He was also in the Hindu Mahasabha. These groups held strong Hindu views.
Godse tried to kill Mahatma Gandhi twice before. He failed both times. In 1948, he succeeded. He shot Gandhi three times. This happened at a prayer meeting in New Delhi.
Godse had a plan with six other men. He believed Gandhi was too kind to Muslims. After the shooting, a man named Herbert Reiner Jr. held Godse. Police then took him away.
A trial lasted for over a year. The court sentenced Godse to death. Leaders of India did not change this choice. Godse was hanged in 1949. Many people in India felt great sadness. Some people still debate his actions today.
Nathuram Vinayak Godse was a Hindu nationalist and political activist in India. He was known for his strong beliefs about the identity of the new Indian state. Godse was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which is a political party. He was also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS. This group is described as a right-wing paramilitary organization. Godse worked to spread the ideas of his mentor, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Savarkar had created the ideology known as Hindutva.
Godse's life began with an unusual childhood in a Maharashtrian family. He was born in 1910 to Vinayak Vamanrao Godse and Lakshmi. His parents originally named him Ramachandra. They feared a curse might harm their male children because they had lost three sons. For the first few years, he was raised as a girl. He even had his nose pierced and wore a nose-ring. In Marathi, a nose-ring is called a "nath." This is how he earned the nickname "Nathuram."
In the 1940s, Godse became very active in politics. He tried to kill Mahatma Gandhi twice before he finally succeeded. In May 1944, he led a group of young men at a prayer meeting. They tried to use a knife, but the crowd stopped them. In September 1944, he tried to block Gandhi's path with a dagger. Both times, Gandhi chose not to press criminal charges against him. These events showed how determined Godse was to reach his goal.
On January 30, 1948, Godse carried out his plan in New Delhi. He stepped out of a crowd during a prayer meeting at Birla House. He shot Gandhi three times in the chest at point-blank range. A man named Herbert Reiner Jr. rushed forward to grab Godse. Reiner was a vice-consul at the American embassy in Delhi. He held Godse until the police and military arrived. Godse had planned this act with Narayan Apte and six other men.
After the shooting, Godse faced a trial that lasted over a year. On November 8, 1949, the court sentenced him to death. Gandhi's sons, Manilal and Ramdas, asked for mercy for him. However, Indian leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru turned down these pleas. Godse was executed at Ambala Central Jail on November 15, 1949. His actions caused great sadness and many people in India mourned Gandhi. Even today, people still discuss and debate his role in history.
Nathuram Vinayak Godse was an Indian Hindu nationalist and political activist. He is primarily known for the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. Godse held strong political beliefs regarding the identity of the newly independent Indian state. He was a member of the Hindu Mahasabha, which is a Hindutva political party. He was also a member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, or RSS. The RSS is described as a right-wing Hindutva paramilitary organization. Godse worked to popularize the ideas of his mentor, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. Savarkar had formulated the ideology known as Hindutva.
Godse's early life involved unique family circumstances in Maharashtra. He was born on May 19, 1910, to Vinayak Vamanrao Godse and Lakshmi. His father worked as a postal employee. At birth, his parents named him Ramachandra. They did this because they feared a curse targeting their male children. This fear came after they had lost three previous sons. For the first few years, he was raised as a girl. He had his nose pierced and wore a nose-ring. In the Marathi language, a nose-ring is called a "nath." This is how he received the nickname "Nathuram," which means "Ram with a nose-ring." After a younger brother was born, his family began treating him as a boy.
As an adult, Godse became deeply involved in political activism. He attended school in Baramati through the fifth standard. Later, he moved to Pune to study at an English-language school. He eventually dropped out of high school to focus on politics. Godse joined the RSS in Sangli in 1932 as a boudhik karyawah, or ground worker. He also remained a member of the Hindu Mahasabha. He often wrote articles in newspapers to spread his political thoughts. During this time, he worked with M. S. Golwalkar, who later became the RSS chief. They worked together to translate a book called "Rashtra Mimansa" into English.
Godse's political path included several violent attempts against Mahatma Gandhi. In May 1944, he led a group of 15 to 20 young men. They attempted to attack Gandhi with a knife during a prayer meeting in Panchgani. The crowd prevented the attack from succeeding. Gandhi chose not to press criminal charges against Godse. In September 1944, Godse tried to block Gandhi's path near Sevagram. He was arrested with a dagger and made threats against Gandhi's life. Again, Gandhi's policy of not pressing charges meant Godse was released.
The final assassination occurred on January 30, 1948. At 5:05 pm, Gandhi was walking to a prayer meeting at Birla House in New Delhi. Godse stepped out from the crowd and shot Gandhi three times in the chest. The shots were fired at point-blank range. The crowd was left in a state of shock. Herbert Reiner Jr., a vice-consul at the American embassy, rushed forward. He grasped Godse by the shoulders and neck to restrain him. Military personnel eventually disarmed Godse and took him into custody. Godse had plotted this act with Narayan Apte and six other individuals.
Following the event, Godse faced a lengthy legal process. He was tried at the Punjab High Court in Shimla. The trial lasted for more than one year. On November 8, 1949, the court sentenced him to death. Gandhi's sons, Manilal and Ramdas Gandhi, requested that his sentence be changed. However, Indian leaders turned down these pleas for clemency. These leaders included Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Deputy Prime Minister Vallabhbhai Patel. Governor-General Chakravarti Rajagopalachari also declined the request. Godse was executed at Ambala Central Jail on November 15, 1949.
The assassination had a massive impact on Indian society. Millions of people in India mourned the death of Gandhi. The Hindu Mahasabha faced widespread criticism. The RSS was also temporarily banned following the event. There have been ongoing debates about Godse's political motivations. He claimed Gandhi favored Muslim political demands during the 1947 partition of India. Some scholars describe the assassination as a terrorist act. This is because the violence was used to pursue a specific political goal. Even today, the memory of these events remains a part of Indian history. ]
