Nathan Wei Chen is a highly decorated American figure skater. He is widely recognized as one of the greatest men's figure skaters in history. Chen is known for performing some of the most technically difficult programs in the world. He is famously called the "Quad King" due to his mastery of quadruple jumps. These are jumps where the skater rotates four times in the air. Chen was the first skater to successfully land all five reverse take-off quadruple jumps in competition with a positive grade of execution. These specific jumps are known as the Lutz, flip, loop, Salchow, and toeloop.

To achieve such high levels of athleticism, Chen utilized several different training methods. His mother enrolled him in gymnastics and ballet to improve his coordination and strength. He trained with the Ballet West Academy for more than six years. In 2008, he placed first in the all-around at the Utah Boys' State Gymnastics Championships. This diverse training helped him master the technical requirements of elite skating. He also learned a specific technique for rotation from his former coach, Karel Kovar. This involves pulling his arms across his torso in a "seat belt" position to increase rotation speed.

Chen's competitive career progressed through several distinct stages. He began skating at age three in Salt Lake City, Utah. By age ten, he became the youngest U.S. novice men's champion in history. He then moved to the junior level, winning a national junior title in 2012. His transition to the senior level was marked by significant technical breakthroughs. In 2016, he became the first U.S. man to land four quadruple jumps in a free skate. He also became the first U.S. man to land two quadruple jumps in a short program.

History shows that Chen's path to success required immense dedication and sacrifice. Born in 1999 to Chinese immigrant parents, he grew up in a family that valued academic and musical pursuits. His mother, Hetty Wang, worked as a medical translator and cleaned houses to finance his skating. During trips to train with coach Rafael Arutyunyan in California, Chen and his mother sometimes slept in their car. Despite these financial challenges, Chen's talent continued to grow. He eventually became the first Asian American man to win U.S., world, and Olympic titles in single skating.

His statistical achievements are among the most impressive in the modern era of the sport. Chen held a winning streak that lasted more than three years from 2018 to 2021. He is a three-time World champion, winning in 2018, 2019, and 2021. He also secured six consecutive U.S. national titles from 2017 to 2022. At the 2022 Winter Olympics, he won gold medals in both the team event and the singles event. This made him the first single skater to achieve both gold medals in the same Olympic games.

Chen has set numerous records under the International Skating Union (ISU) Judging System. He is the current world record holder for men in both the short program and the combined total score. He also holds the highest total scores in three major ISU competitions: the Olympics, the Four Continents Championships, and the Grand Prix Final. His ability to combine extreme technical difficulty with high scores has redefined athletic standards. Many news outlets have cited him as a transformative figure in men's figure skating.

He also wrote a children's book titled "Wei Skates On." His impact was recognized by Time magazine, which included him on its list of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2022. He was also named Most Valuable Skater at the 2023 ISU Skating Awards. Chen remains a symbol of how technical mastery and personal perseverance can lead to global recognition.
