The name of the dish means "fat rice" in Malay. This does not mean the rice is heavy. Instead, it means the rice is rich or creamy. This happens because of the way it is made. First, cooks soak the rice in coconut cream. Then, they steam the mixture together. They also add pandan leaves to the rice. These leaves give the dish a very distinct flavor.

There are many ways to serve nasi lemak. A common way is to wrap it in banana leaves. This can help make the flavor even better. It usually comes with a spicy sauce called sambal. You might also see cucumber slices and roasted peanuts. Some people add fried anchovies, which are called ikan bilis. For a bigger meal, you can add fried chicken or beef stew called rendang.

Different places have their own special versions of the dish. In Alor Setar, the rice is yellow and called nasi lemak kuning. In the Cameron Highlands, the rice is actually dark pink! This is because they add strawberries to the sambal. In the Riau Islands, people often add seafood like squid or shrimp. Some people even make a vegetarian version without any fish.
