Today, the city has an estimated population of 367,353 people. It is the largest city in its prefecture and the sixth-largest in the Kansai region of Honshu.

The history of Nara is tied to its role as a former capital. From 710 to 784 CE, Nara was the seat of the Japanese Emperor. During this era, the city was known as Heijō or Heijō-kyō. There were brief interruptions to this status. Between 740 and 745 CE, the capital moved to Kuni-kyō, Naniwa-kyō, and Shigaraki Palace. Eventually, the capital moved to Nagaoka-kyō and later to Heian-kyō, which is modern Kyoto. This long period of rule is so significant that it is called the Nara period.

Architects designed the ancient city using a specific grid system. This layout was modeled after the Tang dynasty capital, Chang’an, in China. The city was divided by four great roads into different zones. These zones were called the 'Right Capital' and 'Left Capital.' The Emperor's palace was located at the north side of the city. This palace faced south to follow Chinese cosmology. This design was intended to show the ruler bringing heaven down to the earth.

Scholars have many theories about the origin of the name "Nara." One widely accepted idea is the "flat land" theory. This theory suggests the name comes from the verb *narasu*, meaning to flatten or level. Folklorist Kunio Yanagita argued that the name refers to a gentle slope or flat area.

Another theory suggests the name comes from *nara*, the Japanese word for oak trees. A third idea proposes the name is a loanword from Old Korean. In Korean, *nara* can mean a country or a kingdom.

Nara is famous for its deep religious history and many ancient structures. The city is home to eight major heritage sites. These include Tōdai-ji, Saidai-ji, Kōfuku-ji, Kasuga Shrine, Gangō-ji, Yakushi-ji, Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace.

Many visitors come to see the historic temples and landmarks. The city also maintains many traditional festivals. The Neri-Kuyo Eshiki spring festival has been held at Tōdai-ji for over 1,000 years.

Another event is the Kemari Festival, where participants wear costumes that represent styles from 700 years ago.

Nara connects many different aspects of Japanese culture. It links ancient political structures to modern tourism. The city's architecture reflects this mix of old and new. For example, the Nara Hotel was designed by Tatsuno Kingo in 1909. It combines modern elements with traditional Japanese styles. Even the local shops and galleries often use architecture adapted from traditional merchant houses. This blend makes Nara a unique place where history and modern life exist together.
