She is recognized as one of the most influential figures in the global fashion industry. During the late 1980s and 1990s, she was part of a group of elite models known as supermodels. This term describes models who achieve massive international fame and commercial success. Campbell was specifically part of a group called the "Big Six." This group included models such as Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, and Kate Moss. Her career has spanned decades and includes many different artistic roles.

Campbell's professional journey began with a foundation in dance. She studied ballet at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. Her first public appearance occurred in 1978 at age eight. She appeared in a music video for Bob Marley's "Is This Love" at the Keskidee in London. In 1986, while still a student, she was scouted by Beth Boldt. Boldt was the head of the Synchro Model Agency. This discovery led to her first major magazine cover for British Elle in April 1986.

Her transition from dance to modeling changed the course of her life.

As her career progressed, Campbell achieved several historic milestones for Black models. In December 1987, she appeared on the cover of British Vogue. This was the first Black cover girl for that magazine since 1966. In 1988, she became the first Black model on the cover of French Vogue. This happened after designer Yves St. Laurent threatened to stop advertising with the magazine if they did not use her. She also made history in the September issue of American Vogue. This issue is traditionally the most important edition of the year.

These achievements broke significant racial barriers in high fashion.

Campbell's influence extended to the catwalk and various high-profile fashion shows. She worked with legendary designers such as Gianni Versace and Azzedine Alaïa. In 1996, she made history at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show. She was the first Black model to open the show. She eventually walked that catwalk seven times before her last appearance in 2005. In 1997, she became the first Black woman to open a Prada show. She also famously fell during a 1993 Vivienne Westwood show. Her platform shoes from that fall are now displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Beyond modeling, Campbell explored several other entertainment sectors. In 1994, she released an R&B studio album titled Babywoman. The album was produced by Youth and Tim Simenon. While it was commercially successful in Japan, it faced criticism from music critics. That same year, she released a novel titled Swan. The book was a story about a supermodel facing blackmail. It was ghostwritten by Caroline Upcher because Campbell lacked the time to write it herself. She also pursued acting in television series like Empire and American Horror Story.

She even hosted the reality competition show The Face in several countries.

Campbell has maintained a presence in the industry through various brand partnerships and media projects. In 1999, she signed a cosmetics contract with Cosmopolitan Cosmetics. This allowed her to launch her own signature fragrances. In 2012, she performed in the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games. She modeled a gold-speckled gown designed by Alexander McQueen. In 2018, she received the Fashion Icon award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. More recently, she started a YouTube web series called No Filter with Naomi. This series allows her to interview various famous guests.

Her life and career connect to broader discussions about representation and celebrity culture. By breaking cover girl records, she changed the visual standards of major publications like Vogue. Her work has influenced how the fashion industry views diversity. Even her personal life has been subject to intense public scrutiny. In September 2024, she was banned from being a charity trustee in the United Kingdom for five years. This followed an investigation into financial misconduct. Despite these challenges, her legacy in fashion remains significant. Her likeness is even honored with a wax figure at Madame Tussauds.
