It is the ninth-highest mountain in the world. This peak is located in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. It sits just south of the Indus River. The mountain serves as the western anchor of the Himalayan mountain range. To the north, the western end of the Karakoram range is nearby.

Nanga Parbat is also one of the 14 "eight-thousanders." This term describes mountains with a summit above 8,000 meters. It is a massive part of the global landscape.

The mountain is a complex structure of rock and ice. A long ridge forms its core and runs from southwest to northeast. This ridge contains several different faces and subsidiary peaks. The south and southeast side is dominated by the Rupal Face. This face is often called the highest mountain face in the world. The north and northwest side is more complex. It is divided into the Diamir face and the Rakhiot face by a long ridge.

The southwestern part of the ridge is known as the Mazeno Ridge. The main ridge also arcs northeast at Rakhiot Peak.

Nanga Parbat has incredible vertical relief. This means it rises very steeply from the land around it. The Rakhiot Flank rises from the Indus River valley to the summit. This area represents one of the ten greatest elevation gains on Earth.

The mountain also features several glaciers, such as the Rakhiot glacier. Near the base of the Rupal Face, there is a glacial lake called Latbo. A seasonal village also sits near this lake.

The mountain is physically growing as well. According to Guinness World Records, it grows about 7 mm every year.

History shows that Nanga Parbat has been a difficult place to explore. The name "Nanga Parbat" comes from Sanskrit words meaning "naked mountain." This refers to the south face, which is usually without snow. Locally, it is known as Diamer or Deo Mir. These names mean "mountain of God." Early European expeditions began soon after the mountain was discovered. In 1895, Albert F. Mummery led a trip to the peak. Sadly, Mummery and two companions died while exploring the Rakhiot Face.

In the 1930s, German mountaineers became very interested in the mountain. They could not attempt Mount Everest because they lacked access to Tibet. Therefore, Nanga Parbat was the highest mountain they could reach. These early expeditions faced many hardships. In 1934, a storm trapped many climbers. Several famous German mountaineers and six Sherpas died from exhaustion and altitude sickness.

In 1937, an avalanche killed sixteen men at Camp IV. These events led to the mountain's nickname, "Killer Mountain."

A major milestone occurred on July 3, 1953.

An Austrian climber named Hermann Buhl achieved the first ascent. He was part of a German-Austrian expedition. Buhl's climb was extremely dramatic and dangerous. He climbed the final 1,000 meters entirely alone. He did not use supplemental oxygen to help him breathe. He reached the summit very late in the evening. To survive the night, he had to bivouac, or camp, while standing upright on a narrow ledge.

Nanga Parbat is unique among the world's highest peaks. It is one of only two peaks that rank in the top twenty for both height and prominence. Prominence is a measure of how much a mountain stands out from its surroundings. Nanga Parbat ranks ninth in height and fourteenth in prominence. Mount Everest is the only other peak that ranks in the top twenty for both. In the Himalayas, Nanga Parbat is the second most prominent peak. It remains a vital part of the mountain systems in Asia.
