The Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules, or ITbM, launched in April 2013. It focuses on areas like nanocarbon chemistry and parasitic plants. The Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research, known as ISEE, was established in 2015. ISEE uses fusion research to study global environmental issues and space. Another important group is the Institute of Materials and Systems for Sustainability, or IMaSS. IMaSS works on energy conservation and creating an ecological society. The Kobayashi-Masakawa Institute for the Origin of Particles and the Universe, or KMI, focuses on particle physics and astrophysics.

Nagoya University is world-famous for its scientific achievements. It is the birthplace of the Sakata School of physics and the Hirata School of chemistry. Many important scientific advancements began here. These include the Sakata model and the PMNS matrix. The university is also linked to the Okazaki fragment and the Blue LED. These discoveries have changed how we understand the physical world. The university's research standards are very high in physics, chemistry, and biology. In 2019, it had the fifth highest number of accepted patents among Japanese universities.

The university has a strong connection to the Nobel Prize.
