A crime happens, and the truth stays hidden until the end. Often, a detective solves the case. They use logic to find the answer from facts.

There are many ways to tell these tales. A "whodunit" is a story where you get clues. You can try to guess the culprit before the end. Some stories are "howcatchems." These show the crime at the start. Then, you watch the detective try to solve it.

Some books are "cozy mysteries." These stories have very little violence. They often feature smart women in small towns. Other books are "hardboiled." These focus on gritty action and real life.

Famous characters like Sherlock Holmes made these stories very popular. Agatha Christie is also a famous writer. She wrote the best-selling mystery "And Then There Were None."
