His journey started with his family and his school years. He was born on September 29, 1866, in a place called Kholm. His father, Serhii, was an Orthodox priest who taught Russian. Even though his parents spoke other languages, his mother, Glafira, taught him Ukrainian. This helped him feel a strong pride in his culture. When he was 14, he went to school in Tiflis. There, he began to love Ukrainian history and books.

History shows how Hrushevsky moved between many different roles. In 1917, he was elected head of the Central Rada. This was a revolutionary parliament for Ukraine. Even during hard times, he never stopped his great work. He wrote a massive ten-volume book called the History of Ukraine-Rus.

This book covered everything from very old times to the year 1660. He returned to Ukraine in 1924 to continue his research. Sadly, he died in 1934 after a surgery in the Caucasus. Today, people still honor him as a hero. You can even see his face on a 50-hryvnia bill.
