Muteness

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Muteness is when a person does not use speech. This can be a temporary state or a permanent one. Some people can still hear others even if they cannot talk. Doctors, teachers, and families often notice this absence of speech. It is important to understand why it happens. Knowing the cause helps people find the right way to communicate.

There are many ways muteness can happen in the body. It might start with the mouth or the tongue. Some people have apraxia, which means their speech muscles do not coordinate well. Other people have damage to the larynx, the part that makes the voice. A person might also have anarthria. This is a severe type of movement trouble in the mouth or lungs. Even a stroke can cause aphasia, which is the loss of speech.

Brain parts play a huge role in how we talk. One area is called Broca's area. It sits in the left inferior frontal cortex of the brain. If this area is hurt by trauma or surgery, a person may become mute. For example, children might face issues after surgery for a cerebellar tumor. This is known as posterior fossa syndrome. These neurological causes show how much the brain controls our voices.

Sometimes, the reason for silence is not a physical injury. Children may experience selective mutism due to anxiety or stress. These children only speak in certain places or with certain people. This often happens before a child reaches five years of age. It is different from a physical disability or a language delay. Some children with autism also have language delays. These delays can affect how they understand or use words.

Helping people communicate is a very important job. Experts use speech assessments to find the best path for help. Some people use speech-generating devices to make sounds. Others use simple tools like pictures on velcro strips. These tools help if a person has hard times with fine motor skills. Programs like pivotal response treatment help children with autism. Other people might use speech therapy or counseling to manage their needs.
