It began with many years of fighting. In 827, forces from Ifriqiya, which is now Tunisia, started to take the island. They slowly won control. By 902, they had conquered most of Sicily.

Sicily became a very rich place. The capital city was Palermo.

It was a center for trade. Merchants came from the Middle East and North Africa. Many people lived there together. They spoke different languages and followed different faiths. This created a unique culture. People grew new crops and built smart water systems. This wealth helped art and science grow.

Later, the island faced hard times. Leaders began to fight each other. In 1071, Norman fighters led by Roger I took control. By 1091, the last Muslim city fell. Even then, many Muslims stayed. They lived as citizens and worked in the royal court. Some of their ways still live on today in local food and buildings.
