In the past, some people thought there were only three Muses. These three were named Aoide, Melete, and Mneme. Later, most people agreed there were nine Muses. They were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne. Mnemosyne was the goddess of memory.

The nine names were Calliope, Clio, Polyhymnia, Euterpe, Terpsichore, Erato, Melpomene, Thalia, and Urania.

Many myths tell stories about them. One myth says they helped people forget their pain. Another story says they won a singing contest against the sirens. After they won, they used feathers to make crowns.

Some people also say they were born from sacred springs on Mount Helicon. The god Apollo was often their leader. Today, we use the word "muse" in a new way. It describes a person who gives an artist new ideas.
