These ducks come from the Americas. They live in places like Texas and Mexico. They also live as far south as Argentina and Uruguay. Some Muscovy ducks live far away from home. You can find them in New Zealand and Australia. They are also found in parts of Europe and the United States.

Because they live in many places, they are not in danger of disappearing.

These birds have very specific ways of living. They like to stay near water like lakes and swamps. They often sleep in trees at night to stay safe.

When they eat, they look for many different things. They graze on plants like seeds, stems, and leaves. They also hunt for small animals. This includes things like fish, insects, spiders, and worms.

Males can be quite aggressive. They often fight over food or territory.

Muscovy ducks have a very unique look.

The males are much larger than the females. A male can weigh twice as much as a female. Their feathers are mostly black and very shiny. They also have large white patches on their wings. The males have a red knob on their face near the bill. This knob is made of bare skin. Females are smaller and have more plain feathers. They do not have the large red knob.

Scientists have studied these ducks for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described them in 1758. He called them *Anas moschata*. This name means "musk duck." The word musk refers to a strong smell. Some people think they were named after the Muisca people. The Muisca lived in what is now Colombia. Others think the name comes from a trading company. This company was called the Muscovy Company. They traded goods between different lands.

Raising these ducks is a big job for a mother.

A female lays between 8 and 15 white eggs. She usually hides them in a hole in a tree. The eggs take about 30 or 31 days to hatch. Once they hatch, the chicks stay very close to their mother. They need her body heat to stay warm. The father often stays with the family too. He walks with the young ones to keep them safe. This helps the small chicks grow into strong adults.
