The Murray cod is a huge freshwater fish from Australia.

It is the largest fish that lives only in fresh water in Australia. This fish is an apex predator in the Murray-Darling River system. An apex predator is a living thing at the top of the food chain. It plays a very important role in the wildlife of the rivers. This fish is also a big part of Australian human culture. People often enjoy fishing for them or keeping them in aquariums.

This fish has a very interesting way it works for hunting. During the day, it is a demersal ambush predator. This means it stays near the bottom and waits for prey to swim by. At night, it becomes a pelagic predator. In this way, it swims in the open water and hunts near the surface. The cod eats almost anything smaller than itself. It likes to eat crustaceans like yabbies, shrimp, and crayfish. It also eats fish, mussels, turtles, and even frogs.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these fish. Major Mitchell was the explorer who first described the species. He found them in the Peel River. Because of this, the scientific name is Maccullochella peelii. An early researcher named Allan Riverstone McCulloch also helped name the fish. For a while, there was confusion about different types of cod. In the 1970s, new genetic tools helped scientists tell them apart. They found that the trout cod and Murray cod are separate species.

Murray cod live in many different places in the Murray-Darling basin. This is Australia's largest river system. The fish can live in cool, fast streams with rocks. They can also live in large, slow rivers. These fish are very long-lived. Some may live for 70 years or more. This long life helps them survive in the changing Australian environment. They often wait for very wet years to have many babies at once.

Today, these fish face a hard job to stay healthy. Their numbers have gone down a lot since people arrived in Australia. Overfishing has taken too many fish out of the water. River regulation and habitat degradation also make life hard. This means their homes are changing or becoming less healthy. Because of these problems, the Murray cod is now a threatened species. We must understand them to help them thrive in their rivers again.
