He also led a trip to the Canary Islands in 1586. During that trip, he captured the Spanish governor of Lanzarote. 
In 1609, Murat Reis faced a very large enemy fleet. This fleet had ten galleys near the island of Cyprus. One ship was a huge galleon called the Red Inferno. It was armed with 90 cannons. Murat Reis used his own cannons to hit the enemy ships. He successfully captured the Red Inferno and six other galleys. He also took 160 cannons and 2000 muskets from the enemy. 
Murat Reis died in 1609 during the siege of Vlorë. He asked to be buried in Rhodes. A mosque was named in his honor there. Today, many people still remember his name. Some submarines in the Turkish Navy are named after him. A part of the city of Algiers is also named Bir Mourad Raïs. Even famous writers like Miguel de Cervantes wrote about him.

His mission was to clear the waters between Crete, Rhodes, and Cyprus. This was necessary to allow for the siege and conquest of Cyprus. He had to block Venetian ships from sailing from Crete to assist the island. He continued these operations until the Venetian stronghold of Famagusta surrendered. Later, in 1586, he led the first Barbary corsair expedition into the Atlantic Ocean. During this trip, he captured several of the Canary Islands and the Spanish governor of Lanzarote.
In 1609, Murat Reis engaged in a major conflict near the island of Cyprus. He sought to intercept a joint French-Maltese fleet of ten galleys. This fleet included a massive galleon called the Galeona Rossa. The Ottomans knew this ship as the Red Inferno because it was armed with 90 cannons. The fleet was commanded by a knight named Fresine. Murat Reis used his cannons to strike the enemy from both long and close range. He successfully captured the Red Inferno and six other galleys. The victory resulted in the capture of 500 soldiers, 160 cannons, and 2,000 muskets. 
Despite his success in the battle against the French-Maltese fleet, the fighting was difficult. Murat Reis was seriously injured during this specific engagement. Later in 1609, he participated in the siege of Vlorë. It was during this siege that he passed away. Following his own personal wishes, he was buried in Rhodes. He was laid to rest in the cemetery of the Murat Reis Mosque. This mosque was named in his honor to remember his life. 
The legacy of Murat Reis the Elder remains visible in many places today. The Turkish Navy has named several submarines after him, including those in the Oruç Reis-class. In the city of Algiers, a municipality is named Bir Mourad Raïs, which means Murat Reis' well. His life has even entered the world of literature. Famous Spanish Golden Age writers, such as Miguel de Cervantes and Lope de Vega, mentioned him in their works. They referred to him by the name Morato Arráez. His history connects the naval traditions of the Ottoman Empire to the wider history of the Mediterranean and Atlantic oceans.
