Kemal Reis was a prominent Ottoman privateer and admiral during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. A privateer is a person who engages in maritime warfare, often acting with official support. He was a central figure in the naval power of the Ottoman Empire. His career helped expand the empire's reach across the Mediterranean Sea. He was also the paternal uncle of Piri Reis. Piri Reis was a famous Ottoman admiral and a skilled cartographer, or mapmaker. The two men frequently traveled together on major naval expeditions.

Kemal Reis was born around 1451 in Manisa, located on the Aegean coast. His exact ancestry is a subject of debate among historians. Some sources suggest he was born into a Turkish family. Other sources claim he came from a Greek family that converted to Islam. His full name was Ahmed Kemaleddin. In Europe, particularly in Italy and Spain, he was known by names like Camali or Camalicchio. He began his naval career as a commander for the Sanjak Bey of Eğriboz. This was a provincial governor in an area under Ottoman control.
In 1487, Sultan Bayezid II gave Kemal Reis a significant mission. He was tasked with defending the lands of Emir Abu Abdullah in Granada. Granada was one of the last Muslim strongholds in Spain at that time. Kemal Reis led an expeditionary force to Málaga, where he captured the city. Between 1490 and 1492, he performed a vital humanitarian task. He transported Muslims and Jews who were escaping Spain to the Ottoman Empire. These refugees brought new ideas, methods, and craftsmanship to the empire. This influx of knowledge helped increase the rising power of the Ottoman state.

By 1495, Sultan Bayezid II promoted Kemal Reis to the rank of admiral. The Sultan ordered the construction of a massive flagship named the Göke. This vessel was designed to carry 700 soldiers. It was also equipped with the strongest cannons available during that period. Two large galleys of this specific type were built for the navy. One was for Kemal Reis and the other was for Burak Reis. A galley is a type of ship propelled by both oars and sails. These ships allowed the Ottoman fleet to maintain high levels of mobility.
Kemal Reis played a major role in the Ottoman-Venetian Wars. In August 1499, he led a large fleet at the Battle of Zonchio. This battle is also called the First Battle of Lepanto. It was a landmark event because it was the first naval battle in history to use cannons on ships. The conflict took place over four separate days in August 1499. Kemal Reis defeated the Venetian fleet commanded by Antonio Grimani. Following this victory, the Sultan gifted ten captured Venetian galleys to Kemal Reis. This success helped the Ottomans overwhelm Venetian possessions in Greece.

In August 1500, Kemal Reis won the Second Battle of Lepanto. He bombarded the fortress of Modon from the sea and captured the town. This victory was part of a campaign that saw the loss of the "two eyes of the Republic." This phrase referred to the important ports of Modon and Coron. The loss of these ports forced Venice to seek peace in 1503. Kemal Reis also captured the port of Navarino. His actions during these years fundamentally shifted the balance of power in the Ionian Sea. He proved that Ottoman naval technology and strategy could challenge established powers.
Later in his career, Kemal Reis explored the Atlantic Ocean. In 1501, he sailed west and reached the Canary Islands. While raiding ships off the coast of Valencia, he found unusual items. He discovered a strange feather headdress and an unfamiliar black stone. A prisoner explained that these items came from lands discovered to the west. The prisoner had traveled to these lands under the command of a man named Colombo. He even possessed a chart drawn by Colombo himself. This chart became a primary source for the famous Piri Reis map of 1513. This connection shows how Kemal Reis's voyages helped expand global geographical knowledge.
