Hayreddin Barbarossa was a powerful Ottoman corsair and naval commander.

Khizr was born between 1466 and 1483 on the island of Lesbos. His father, Yakup Ağa, was an Ottoman sipahi of Turkish or Albanian origin.
Oruç Reis, the eldest brother, was the first to become a famous leader. He was a skilled seaman who spoke many languages. These included Italian, Spanish, French, Greek, and Arabic. The brothers began working as privateers to counter the Knights Hospitaller. These knights were based on the island of Rhodes. During a mission near Tripoli, Lebanon, the Knights attacked the brothers. Ilyas was killed in the fight, and Oruç was wounded. Oruç was held as a galley slave for four years. His father eventually paid a ransom to secure his release.
Oruç later gained significant support from Ottoman officials. An Ottoman prince named Şehzade Korkut gave him 18 galleys. A galley is a type of ship powered by oars. Later, Korkut provided 24 more galleys at the port of İzmir. Oruç and Khizr moved their operations to the Western Mediterranean. In 1503, they used the island of Djerba as a base. They also gained permission to use the port of La Goulette in Tunis. This arrangement required them to give one-third of their spoils to the sultan.
Oruç earned the nickname "Barbarossa," which means "Redbeard" in Italian. This name came from a Spanish term for him helping Muslims flee Spain. In 1516, the brothers captured Algiers from Spanish control. Oruç declared himself the Sultan of Algiers. However, Oruç died in 1518 during a battle in Tlemcen. He and Ishak were killed while defending the city against Spanish forces. After Oruç died, Khizr inherited his brother's nickname and his naval responsibilities. He also received the honorary name Hayreddin, meaning "goodness of the faith."
Hayreddin's rise to power continued under the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1533, Suleiman appointed him Kapudan Pasha.

Hayreddin's career had a lasting impact on Mediterranean history. He managed large fleets and coordinated complex military operations. He even led an embassy to France in 1533. His work helped connect the Ottoman Empire to North African territories like Algiers. After years of active service, he retired to Constantinople in 1545. He died there on July 4, 1546. His life serves as a major example of how naval power shaped the politics of the 16th century.
