Multibody system

A multibody system is a way to study how different parts move together.

These parts are called bodies, and they can be rigid or flexible. A body might be a robot arm or a car wheel.

Sometimes these bodies are joined together by links. A link is a connection between two bodies or between a body and the ground. These links use constraints, which are rules that limit how the parts can move. For example, a revolute joint only allows one type of rotation. This study helps us understand how many parts work as one single machine.

To understand these systems, we look at degrees of freedom and constraints. Degrees of freedom are the number of ways an object can move independently. A single rigid body in space has six degrees of freedom. It can move in three directions and rotate in three ways. However, constraints change these numbers by restricting motion. A prismatic joint, for instance, allows a part to slide along one axis but stops it from rotating. When many bodies are linked, the whole system might only have one degree of freedom left.

Scientists have worked on these ideas for a very long time. Isaac Newton studied the simplest bodies, which are called free particles. Leonhard Euler studied rigid bodies and introduced the idea of reaction forces between them. Later, mathematicians like Lagrange created new ways to describe these movements. Lagrange developed formalisms based on minimal coordinates. These methods help us describe how parts move through space. Today, engineers use these old rules to build very modern machines.

There are many important places where these systems are used.

Aerospace engineers study how helicopters and landing gears work under different gravity conditions. In biomechanics, people study how living things move. Engineers also use these methods for combustion engines, gears, and transmissions. Even the way sand or molecules move can be studied this way. Computer programs help scientists simulate thousands of interconnected bodies at once. This makes it easier to design machines that are stable and efficient.

One famous example is the slider-crank mechanism.

This machine turns rotational motion into translational motion, which is moving in a straight line. It uses a driving beam, a connection rod, and a sliding body to work. In some models, the connection rod is a flexible body. You can see this in how a computer mouse moves on a desk. A mouse has three degrees of freedom: left-right, forward-backward, and turning. Just like a mouse, complex machines follow specific rules of motion.
