Scientists study how many parts move together.

These parts are called bodies. A body can be a robot arm or a car wheel.

We use links to join these bodies. Links use constraints to limit how parts move. A constraint is a rule that stops certain motions. For example, a revolute joint only lets a part turn. A prismatic joint only lets a part slide.

We also talk about degrees of freedom. This is the number of ways a part can move. A single part in space has six degrees of freedom. It can move in three ways and turn in three ways. But links change these numbers. They can make a whole system move in just one way.

Engineers use computers to study these systems. This helps them build better machines. They study helicopters and car engines. They even study how sand or molecules move. This work helps make cars more stable and smooth. It can also help make robots work better.
