His father, Sheikh Noor Muhammad, was a religious man and a tailor. His mother, Imam Bibi, was known for her kindness and help to the poor. Iqbal started his formal education at age four in a mosque. He learned to read the Qur'an and studied Arabic and Persian. He later attended Scotch Mission College and Government College in Lahore. By his teenage years, he was already publishing poetry under a pen-name.

To deepen his knowledge, Iqbal traveled to Europe for advanced studies. In 1905, he moved to England to study law and philosophy. He earned a second Bachelor of Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge. He also qualified as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn. In 1907, he moved to Germany to pursue a doctorate. He studied at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. His PhD thesis focused on the development of metaphysics in Persia.

During this time, he also mastered the German language in just three months.

Iqbal's academic and professional life was very diverse. He served as a reader of Arabic at Oriental College from 1899 to 1903. He also worked as a professor of philosophy and English literature at Government College, Lahore. Although he practiced law at the Chief Court of Lahore, he eventually focused on writing. He became the general secretary of Anjuman-e-Himayat-e-Islam in 1919. His writings covered many fields, including economics, history, and religion. He used these subjects to discuss the spiritual and political future of Muslim society.

His literary contributions are divided between Urdu and Persian languages. He wrote many famous Urdu poems, such as "Parinde Ki Faryad" and "Tarana-e-Hindi." Some of these early works were written specifically for children. In Persian, he wrote major works like "Asrar-e-Khudi" and "Javed Nama." He often chose Persian because it allowed him to express complex thoughts more easily. His poetry was so significant that it was translated into several European languages. These works helped him gain recognition even in Iran.

Iqbal's political ideas had a profound impact on the Indian subcontinent.

In 1930, he delivered a famous address at the annual assembly of the All-India Muslim League in Allahabad. In this speech, he proposed a political framework for Muslim-majority regions in northwestern India. This helped promote the two-nation theory. He was also elected to the Punjab Legislative Council in 1927. He spent much of his career advocating for the spiritual and political revival of the global Muslim community, or Ummah.

Iqbal's legacy is deeply tied to the nation of Pakistan. He died on 21 April 1938, nine years before the partition of India in 1947.
