At that time, Karachi was part of the Bombay Presidency in British India. His father, Jinnahbhai Poonja, was a successful merchant. The family moved to Karachi during an economic boom. This boom happened because the Suez Canal opened in 1869. The canal made shipping much closer to Europe. Jinnah was the eldest of eight children. He grew up in a wealthy merchant family. He was more fluent in English than in Gujarati or Urdu.

In 1892, Jinnah went to London to study law.

He studied the ideas of thinkers like John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham. These ideas focused on democracy and progressive politics. Jinnah also became very interested in Western fashion. He was known for being impeccably dressed in public. He owned over 200 suits and wore starched collars.

His political journey began with the Indian National Congress. In the early 1900s, Jinnah worked for Hindu-Muslim unity. He helped create the 1916 Lucknow Pact. This pact was an agreement between the Congress and the Muslim League. However, Jinnah later resigned from the Congress in 1920. He disagreed with their use of satyagraha, which he called political anarchy. He then focused on the All-India Muslim League. He wanted to protect the rights of Muslims. He feared they would be marginalized in a Hindu-dominated state.

In 1940, the Muslim League passed the Lahore Resolution. This was a major turning point for the movement. During the Second World War, the League grew much stronger. This happened while many Congress leaders were in prison. After the war, the League won most seats in provincial elections. Eventually, the Congress and the Muslim League could not agree on power-sharing. They could not find a way to rule British India as one united state. Instead, they agreed to divide the land. This created a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan.

Pakistan gained independence on August 14, 1947.
