Muhammad al-Bukhari was a highly influential 9th-century Muslim muhaddith. A muhaddith is a scholar who specializes in hadith. Hadith are the recorded sayings and actions of the Prophet Muhammad. In Sunni Islam, al-Bukhari is widely regarded as the most important hadith scholar in history. His work provides a vital foundation for understanding Islamic tradition. He was born in Bukhara, located in present-day Uzbekistan, on July 21, 810. His family had deep roots in scholarship and Persian descent.

Al-Bukhari's early life was defined by intense study and travel. He began his education in hadith at a very young age. By the year 821 CE, he was already a dedicated student. When he was sixteen, he performed the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. He stayed in Mecca for two years before moving to Medina. During his youth, he traveled to major Islamic learning centers. These included Syria, Kufa, Basra, Egypt, Yemen, and Baghdad.

Throughout his travels, al-Bukhari studied under many prominent scholars. He learned from influential figures such as Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ali ibn al-Madini. His dedication to his studies resulted in a remarkable feat of memory. It is recorded that he memorized over 600,000 hadith narrations. This vast knowledge allowed him to verify the accuracy of different reports. He spent much of his life teaching the hadith he had collected. He sought to ensure that the traditions remained accurate for future generations.

His most significant achievement is the collection known as Sahih al-Bukhari. He completed the compilation of this work in 846 CE. The collection contains approximately 7,563 hadith narrations organized into 97 chapters. This book is considered a masterpiece of Islamic literature. Among Sunni Muslims, it is revered as the most authentic book after the Quran. Together with the collection of his student, Sahih Muslim, it is called the Sahihayn. These two works are also part of the Kutub al-Sittah, the six most highly regarded collections.

Al-Bukhari was a prolific writer of many other important texts. He authored Al-Tarikh al-Kabir, which is a major historical work. He also wrote Al-Adab al-Mufrad, a collection focused on ethics and manners. Some of his writings were technical studies of hadith narrators. These works helped scholars judge the ability of people to convey information. He even wrote a book about the companions of Muhammad and the tabi'un. His diverse writings covered history, biography, and religious law.

In his later years, al-Bukhari faced significant theological challenges. He engaged in a debate regarding the nature of the Quran. He suggested that the human act of reciting the Quran was created. This was intended as an alternative to the views held by the Mu'tazilites. However, his statements were received negatively by some prominent scholars. This led to a period of tension known as the mihna. Because of these disagreements, he was driven out of Nishapur.

Following his exile, al-Bukhari moved to Khartank, a village near Samarkand. He spent his final twenty-four years teaching the hadith he had mastered. He passed away on September 1, 870. Today, his legacy is preserved at the Imam Bukhari Mausoleum in Uzbekistan. The complex includes his tomb, a mosque, a library, and a madrasa. The site was restored in 1998 after centuries of neglect. His life remains a central subject of study in Islamic history and jurisprudence.
