In the stories, he was raised by a pack of wolves. His wolf family calls him Mowgli. Some say this name means "frog" because he has no fur.

Mowgli has many animal friends. Bagheera is a black panther who knows the ways of humans. Baloo is a bear who teaches Mowgli the Law of the Jungle. Mowgli even has a friend named Kaa, who is a large python. He uses his skills to help his wolf brothers. For example, he can pull painful thorns from their paws. He also uses fire to protect himself from a tiger named Shere Khan.

Many people enjoy the tales of Mowgli. Writers have used his story to make new characters like Tarzan. People have also made many movies and plays about him. Some versions are cartoons, and some are live-action films. Even in Russia, his adventures were shown on a postage stamp.
