It is located in western Shandong province, just north of the city of Tai'an. The mountain is the highest point in Shandong. Its highest point is known as Jade Emperor Peak. As the easternmost of the five Sacred Mountains of China, it holds a unique place in the nation's spiritual landscape. It is closely associated with the sunrise, birth, and renewal. Because of its profound cultural and natural value, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is notable for meeting seven of the ten UNESCO evaluation standards. This makes it one of the sites that meets the most standards, alongside the Tasmanian Wilderness in Australia.

The geological formation of Mount Tai is a complex process spanning billions of years. The mountain is a tilted fault-block mountain. This means its height increases from north to south. The rocks are part of the Taishan Complex, which includes metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Some of these rocks formed during the Archean Era, between 1,700 and 2,000 million years ago. The region was once a large subsiding belt or sea canal. Geological movements, known as orogeny, caused these rock layers to fold and uplift into land.

About 600 million years ago, the area sank into the sea again. After another 100 million years, the land rose once more. During the late Mesozoic period, the Pacific plate moved under the Eurasian Plate. This caused the Taishan stratum to experience folds and fractures. This movement caused the mountain to uplift rapidly. The outline we recognize today finally formed during the mid-Cenozoic, about 30 million years ago.

The mountain features a distinct vertical climate gradient due to its height. The lower sections exist in a warm temperate zone. The summit reaches into a medium temperate zone. The area is frequently cloudy and foggy. It receives an average annual precipitation of 1,132mm. This is much higher than the 750mm received by the surrounding areas.

Vegetation covers nearly 80% of the mountain. This plant life is organized into distinct belts. At the foothills, you can see deciduous forests and broad-leaved coniferous mixed forests. Higher up, there are coniferous forests, alpine shrubs, and grasses. There are 989 species of seed plants found here. These belong to 144 different families. The mountain is also home to 462 species of medicinal plants. These include famous varieties like Taishan ginseng and Chinese gromwell.

Human history at Mount Tai stretches back to the Paleolithic period. Evidence shows settlements existed from the Neolithic period onward. Two distinct cultures, the Dawenkou and the Longshan, lived near the mountain. During the Xia dynasty, the mountain was called Mount Dai. It was part of the Qingzhou province. For at least 3,000 years, the mountain has been a site of religious worship. This tradition continued from the Shang dynasty through the Qing dynasty. A major part of this worship involved the Feng and Shan sacrifices. These were official imperial rites. Emperors would perform the Feng sacrifice on the summit to honor Heaven. They performed the Shan sacrifice at the foot of the mountain to honor Earth.

These imperial ceremonies were highly significant for the stability of the empire. The name of the nearby city, Tai'an, reflects this importance. The name can be interpreted as "If Mount Tai is stable, so is the entire country." In 219 BC, the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, held a ceremony at the summit. He used an inscription to proclaim the unity of his empire. Many famous thinkers, including Confucius, interacted with the mountain's traditions. Confucius even wrote about the rituals in his work, the Analects. The mountain also played a major role in the development of Buddhism and Taoism.

Visitors can also find grand structures like the temple complex at the summit.

Some of the trees are also historical monuments. The Han Dynasty Cypresses were planted by Emperor Wu Di about 2,100 years ago. The "Fifth-Rank Pine" was named by Qin Shi Huang.

The mountain's environment supports a wide variety of life. There are over 200 species of animals and 122 species of birds. In the running water, you can find the fish species Varicorhinus macrolepis. The water from the six streams at the summit is very pure. It has low mineral content and a slight acidity of pH 6.3. This high-quality water is a notable feature of the landscape. Today, the mountain remains a major destination. In 2003, it attracted approximately six million visitors. Recent projects have worked to restore the many cultural relics found there.
