The history of Taiyuan is incredibly long. It has more than 2,500 years of urban history. The city's timeline dates back to 497 BC. During this time, the first ancient city called Jinyang was built. This city was built around the southern Jinyuan District. It was built by a man named Dong Anyu. He was a steward for an official in the state of Jin. Over many centuries, Taiyuan served as a capital or a secondary capital. It held this status for many different dynasties. These included the Zhao, Former Qin, and Eastern Wei. It also served the Northern Qi, Northern Jin, and several others. This long history makes it a major center for Northern China.
Many significant political shifts happened in this region. In 453 BC, a major event called the Battle of Jinyang occurred. During this battle, Zhi Yao diverted the flow of the Fen River. He used the water to flood the city of Jinyang. This caused great damage to the Zhao state. Later, Zhao Xiangzi gained allies from the Wei and Han states. On 8 May 453 BC, Zhao troops broke the dams of the Fen River. They flooded the Zhi armies and destroyed them. This conflict led to the Tripartition of Jin in 403 BC. This event divided the state of Jin into three smaller states. These were Han, Zhao, and Wei. This division marked the start of the Warring States period.
The Qin dynasty brought new official names to the area. In 248 BC, the state of Qin attacked Zhao. General Meng'ao led this attack. The Qin obtained the land around Jinyang from the Zhao. The Qin then set up the Taiyuan Commandery. This was the first time the name Taiyuan was used officially. Jinyang served as the administrative center for this commandery. In 221 BC, the Qin conquered the rest of China. They started the first imperial dynasty of China. Taiyuan became one of thirty-six commanderies in the empire.
During the Tang dynasty, Taiyuan reached a high status. The city was the military base for the founding emperors. These were Li Yuan and Li Shimin. Li Shimin described Taiyuan as the foundation of the state. In 690, Wu Zetian named Taiyuan the Northern Capital. This made it one of three major capitals. The other two were Chang'an and Luoyang. In 742 AD, Emperor Xuanzong changed its name again. He called it Beijing. This is a different name from the modern Beijing. During the Five Dynasties period, Taiyuan was often a provisional capital. It was sometimes called "Beidu," which means Northern Capital.
The Song dynasty saw both conflict and construction. In 979, Emperor Taizong launched a campaign against the Northern Han. He defeated a major Liao force. After the city surrendered, Taizong dealt with the city harshly. He ordered the Fen River to flood the city. He also ordered the city to be set on fire. A new city was eventually founded in 982. This new city sat on the banks of the Fen River. One of the oldest buildings in Taiyuan remains today. It is the Temple of the Goddess inside the Jinci Complex. This temple was originally built in 1023. It was later reconstructed in 1102.
In later centuries, Taiyuan became a center for finance. During the Qing dynasty, international trade grew. Trade with Russia was especially important for tea. This led to the development of draft banks. These were known as Piaohao. While many banks were in nearby counties, Taiyuan was a major trading center. This was due to its economic and political status. In the Republican era, the city saw industrial growth. A warlord named Yan Xishan controlled Shanxi from 1911 to 1949. He developed the province as a progressive center. He built the first airport in the province in 1923. Taiyuan also became a center for rail travel.
