Mount Sidley

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Mount Sidley is a massive, dormant volcano located in Antarctica. A dormant volcano is one that is not currently erupting. This mountain is a significant geological feature because it is the highest volcano on the Antarctic continent. It is also a member of the Volcanic Seven Summits. This is a list of the highest volcanoes found on each of the seven continents.

Geologically, Mount Sidley is classified as a polygenetic shield volcano. A polygenetic shield volcano is built by many different eruptions over a long period of time. These volcanoes often have broad, wide shapes rather than steep, narrow peaks. Most of the mountain is currently covered in snow. The volcano is part of the Executive Committee Range in Marie Byrd Land. It is the tallest of the five volcanoes that make up this specific range.

The structure of the mountain includes a specific feature called a caldera. A caldera is a large crater found at the top or side of a volcano. On Mount Sidley, this caldera is located on the southern side of the peak. The mountain is positioned northeast of another mountain called Mount Waesche. This placement helps geologists understand the layout of the Executive Committee Range.

History shows that the mountain was discovered by Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. He spotted the volcano from an airplane on November 18, 1934. Byrd named the mountain in honor of Mabelle E. Sidley. She was the daughter of William Horlick. Mr. Horlick was a contributor to the Byrd Antarctic Expedition, which took place from 1933 to 1935.

Mount Sidley is extremely remote, which affects how well people know it. Because it is so far away, it is less famous in the mountaineering world than other peaks. For example, Mount Erebus is the second-highest volcano in Antarctica. However, Mount Erebus is much more accessible to people. It is located near the United States and New Zealand research bases on Ross Island. Mount Sidley remains much harder to reach due to its location.

The first recorded ascent of the mountain happened many years after its discovery. A New Zealander named Bill Atkinson reached the summit on January 11, 1990. He was not climbing for sport alone during this trip. He was actually working in support of a scientific field party. This group was part of the United States Antarctic Program. His successful climb marked a major milestone for those exploring the Antarctic interior.

Understanding Mount Sidley helps scientists learn about the volcanic history of Antarctica. It belongs to several scientific categories, such as Pliocene shield volcanoes. This tells researchers about the time period when the volcano was active. It is also an ultra-prominent peak in Antarctica. Studying such high, remote volcanoes provides a better picture of how the Earth's crust behaves in cold, isolated regions.
