Moundou

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Moundou is the second-largest city in the country of Chad. It serves as the capital for the Logone Occidental region. The city is situated on the Mbéré River. This river is a tributary of the Western Logone. Moundou is also the primary urban center for the Ngambai people. It functions as a major industrial hub for the nation.

The city's climate is classified as a tropical savanna climate. This is known scientifically as Köppen Aw. The weather remains hot throughout the entire year. There are two distinct periods: a wet season and a dry season. The hottest months occur from March to May. March has the highest average high temperature. April has the highest average low temperature. August is the wettest month with 19 days of precipitation. During August, the humidity reaches 81 percent.

In the early 1900s, the French military completed its conquest of Chad. However, resistance to the colonial regime continued in the southwest. Joseph-François Reste founded the post of Moundou on November 8, 1923. He was a French sergeant and administrator. Reste discovered the site while navigating the Logone in a whaleboat. He chose the location because he found it pretty. He placed the post in the center of a rebellious zone.

Later, a leader named Robert Reverdy helped the city grow. He served as the district chief from 1925 to 1927. Reverdy moved the chief town of the district to Moundou in 1927. He worked to organize the local chieftains. Reverdy also urbanized the post by planting flowers along the roads. These flowers bloomed from February to May. This practice earned the city the nickname "Moundou-la-Rouge."

Industrial development began shortly after the city's founding. In 1926, the Cotton Company of the Congo installed a ginning factory. This company later became Cotonfran in 1928. By 1972, it was renamed CotonTchad. The city also hosts the Gala Brewery. This facility is operated by Brasseries du Logone. It produces the most popular beer in Chad. The city also has a cigarette manufacturer called MCT.

Moundou is divided into four municipal districts. These districts contain 20 different neighborhoods. The first district includes neighborhoods like Dombao and Taye. The second district includes Nguelbe and Baguirmi. The third district includes Guelkoura and Mbague. The fourth district includes Mbombaya and Madana. The city is connected to the rest of Chad by a main road. It is also served by the Moundou Airport.

Education and religion are central to city life. There are many primary and secondary schools. The University of Moundou provides higher education. This institution was created by an ordinance in 2002. The city is also home to many places of worship. Most people attend Muslim mosques. There are also Christian churches and temples. These include the Roman Catholic Diocese of Moundou.

Geography can also cause challenges for the city. The first cadastral map was made in 1926. Early planners faced a problem with the drainage pipeline. They aimed it toward the river. They believed the natural inclination would drain the water away. In reality, the river level is higher than the city. This causes issues during floods. In 2012, the mayor noted that floodwaters from the Logone can spray into the city. This can flood Moundou entirely.
