However, Edward Butler could not find the financial backing to make it a success.

By 1894, the industry moved toward mass production with the Hildebrand & Wolfmüller. This was the first series production motorcycle and the first to be called a "motorcycle." Following this, companies like the Excelsior Motor Company in England and the Orient-Aster in the United States began manufacturing. As engines grew more powerful, many early inventors transitioned from bicycles to motorcycles and eventually to automobiles. By the outbreak of World War I, the Indian company had become the world's largest manufacturer, producing over 20,000 bikes annually.

Warfare and racing have also shaped motorcycle development. During World War I, motorcycles replaced horses for military messengers and reconnaissance. The Triumph Model H, introduced in 1915, became a famous military tool known as the "Trusty Triumph."
