Viruses carried by arthropods like mosquitoes are called arboviruses. Some are specifically called moboviruses, which are mosquito-borne viruses. The Flaviviridae family includes several important viruses. This family contains the West Nile virus and the yellow fever virus. These are single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses. They have a protein coat and use viral antagonists to bypass the mosquito's immune system. This allows the mosquito to carry the virus without being harmed. Other viruses include Zika, dengue, and chikungunya. 
Malaria is a leading cause of premature death globally. In 2012, there were an estimated 207 million cases. This resulted in more than half a million deaths. By 2018, the death toll for malaria reached one million. Children under the age of five are at particularly high risk. Other diseases have significant impacts too. West Nile virus was introduced to the United States in 1999. By 2003, it had spread to almost every state. In 2006 alone, there were over 3,000 cases reported.
Symptoms vary greatly depending on the specific infection. Zika virus can cause fever, rash, and joint pain. Dengue fever often involves high fever and headaches. Medical professionals use various methods to diagnose these illnesses. Doctors look at a patient's travel history to find potential exposures. For dengue, laboratory tests can detect the virus, though results may arrive late. West Nile virus can be confirmed through blood tests looking for antibodies. If a doctor suspects meningitis, they may perform a lumbar puncture. This involves analyzing the cerebrospinal fluid around the brain and spinal cord. For Zika, doctors must use laboratory tests on urine, saliva, or blood to confirm the infection.
