As of 2017, 13 Nobel laureates were affiliated with the institution. It also boasts 6 Fields Medal winners and one Turing Award winner.

It stands 240 meters tall and has 36 stories. Until 1990, it was the tallest building in Europe. The university also manages advanced technology, such as the SKIF MSU supercomputer. Launched in 2008, this computer reached a peak performance of 60 TFLOPS. This made it the fastest supercomputer in the Commonwealth of Independent States at that time.

In recent years, the university has faced significant challenges and changes. After 1991, the university gained a unique status where it is funded directly from the state budget. However, its reputation was impacted by political events in 2022. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, several international institutions suspended their relationships with MSU. This included Yale University and the University of St Andrews. Additionally, major companies like Intel, AMD, and Nvidia suspended processor deliveries to Russia. These events show how the university is connected to global political and economic systems.
