They wanted more power for the Moro people. This group split from an older group in 1977. A leader named Hashim Salamat started it. The MILF fought the Philippine government for many years.

There were many hard times during the fighting. In 2008, many people had to leave their homes. This happened after a court stopped a peace plan. The group and the government had many clashes.

But people kept working for peace. In 2012, the two sides signed a new deal.

This deal helped create a special area. It is called the Bangsamoro region. This area has more power to rule itself. It can use its own money from natural resources. In 2018, the government passed a law to help. The MILF said they would disarm their 30,000 fighters. Now, the group works toward a peaceful future.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, is an Islamic armed group from the Philippines.

This group wants an autonomous region for the Moro people. Autonomy means having the power to rule parts of their own land. The MILF is based in Mindanao and several nearby islands. They have a group of fighters called the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces. For many years, they have worked to change how the government treats them. This history is a very important part of life in the southern Philippines.

The story of the MILF began with a different group called the MNLF. In 1969, students formed the MNLF to seek an independent Muslim nation. They received support and training from Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. In 1976, a peace agreement was signed between the MNLF and the government. However, this deal caused a split within the MNLF leadership. In 1977, Hashim Salamat and 57 other officers left to start a new group. This group was first called "The New Leadership." It was later formally named the MILF in 1984.

Peace has been very hard to reach over the many decades. In 1997, the two sides signed a plan to stop fighting. But this agreement ended in 2000 when the Philippine Army abolished it. This led to more fighting and many difficult years for the people. In 2006, clashes between the MILF and local volunteers displaced 4,000 families. Later, in 2008, a court stopped a major peace plan called the MOA-AD. This caused even more conflict that displaced over 600,000 people. These hard times showed how much people wanted a lasting peace.

Many leaders and negotiators worked through these difficult years. Mohagher Iqbal was a chief negotiator for the MILF. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer led the talks for the Philippine government. In 2010, the MILF changed its goal from total independence to a "substate." This meant they wanted to be like a state in the U.S. They would not handle national defense or foreign affairs. Instead, they would focus on internal security and local rules. This change helped make a final peace deal possible.

In 2012, a framework agreement was signed to bring lasting peace.

This deal paved the way for the Bangsamoro region. Under this plan, the region gets a fair share of money from natural resources. It can also have its own police force. In July 2018, the government passed the Bangsamoro Organic Law. This law gave more autonomy to the Muslim people. In return, the MILF announced it would disarm its 30,000 fighters. This marks a major step toward a peaceful future for Mindanao.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, is an Islamic armed group in the Philippines.

The group seeks an autonomous region for the Moro people. Autonomy allows a specific group to govern its own local affairs. The MILF operates in Mindanao, the Sulu Archipelago, Palawan, and Basilan. Its armed wing is known as the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces, or BIAF. This organization has played a central role in the long struggle for Moro rights.

The roots of the MILF lie in a previous group called the Moro National Liberation Front, or MNLF. In 1969, Moro students formed the MNLF to seek an independent Muslim nation. They received arms and training from Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. In 1976, the MNLF signed the Tripoli Agreement with the Philippine government. This deal offered semi-autonomy to the disputed regions. However, the agreement caused a rift among the MNLF leaders. In 1977, Hashim Salamat and 57 officers broke away to form a new group. They first called themselves "The New Leadership" before formally becoming the MILF in 1984.

History shows that reaching peace has been a difficult process. In 1997, the government and the MILF signed a cessation of hostilities. This agreement was abolished in 2000 by the Philippine Army. This led to a period of intense conflict and declared jihad. In 2006, fighting between the MILF and civilian volunteers displaced 4,000 families. Later, in 2008, a major peace plan called the MOA-AD was stopped by the Supreme Court. This legal decision led to heavy fighting. The violence displaced over 600,000 people and resulted in about 300 deaths.

The nature of the MILF's goals changed significantly over time. In 2011, the group withdrew its demand for total independence. Instead, they began pursuing substate status. This model is similar to a state in the United States. Under this plan, the central government would keep control of national defense and foreign affairs. The substate would focus on internal security and local management. This shift helped move the focus from separation toward cooperative governance.

Negotiations have involved many key figures and complex legal frameworks. Mohagher Iqbal served as a chief negotiator for the MILF. Miriam Coronel-Ferrer acted as the chief negotiator for the Philippine government. In 2012, President Benigno Aquino announced a framework agreement.

This agreement aimed to create an enduring peace. It envisioned a semi-independent area with its own police force. It also allowed for the use of Sharia law specifically for Muslim citizens.

A major part of the peace process involves economic autonomy. The framework agreement allows the proposed Bangsamoro region to keep a larger share of its wealth. Specifically, the region would receive 75 percent of earnings from natural resources and metallic minerals. For other energy resources, the earnings would be split equally. This financial independence is meant to support the local population. It ensures the region can manage its own plentiful natural resources.

The process reached a significant milestone with the Bangsamoro Organic Law. Passed by the Philippine government in July 2018, this law officially granted more autonomy. The region was renamed Bangsamoro to honor the Moro people. In response to this legal progress, the MILF announced it would disarm its 30,000 fighters. This transition from an armed insurgency to a political entity is a major change. It connects the history of conflict to a new era of regional governance.
